“Do you?” Tonito asked.

Lupe shook her head. “No. She’s so mean to us, and Gina is horrible too.”

Tonito nodded sadly. “And Papa can’t seem to do anything about it. I guess we can stay here for a while.” Then the children lay down on the floor and drifted off to sleep.

The next morning Lupe and Tonito went outside and sat under the very same tree the man had fallen from. After a breakfast of sweet, juicy mangoes, they took a walk along the river. “Look,” Tonito said, his eyes widening.

A man was drinking from the river several yards away.

When Lupe looked, her face broke into a smile and she squealed with excitement.

“Papa!” she shouted. “Papa!”

The man stood straight and looked at the children.

“Lupe!” he answered. “Tonito!”

The children ran toward their father and threw their arms around him. “What are you doing here?” Tonito asked.

‘’I’ve been so worried about you children,” he said. “I had to find you. Why did you leave?”

“Papa, we hate it at home. “Lupe said. “We’re always punished for things we didn’t do.”

“I thought so,” her father replied softly. “And I’m so sorry I let that happen.”

His eyes filled with tears. “Let’s go home. I won’t let it happen again.”

Lupe shook her head, and pulled her hand away from her father. “We want to stay here,” she said.

“Please come home with me,” her father said gently. “Things will be better. I promise. If Gina and her mother are making you so miserable, well, … we can start over again, just the three of us.”

“Really?” Lupe and Tonito said at once, their faces brightening.

Their father nodded and wrapped an arm around each of the children. “Yes. Now let’s go home.”
